Activities
The association started with services initiated in 1984 with the aim of helping the affected people of Gas Tragedy in 1984 generally but to help the Malayalee community in particular. The association has also been extending possible help and cooperation to the Govt. Bodies in promoting our arts & culture. Recently, the association has taken initiative in forming a forum of ‘Central India Malayalee Federation’ to take up common issues related to our community members living in central India such as improvement of rail services to south, starting direct air services to Kerala etc. The association has been enhanced the activities like celebrating important festivals, organizing cultural events, various competitions for children, sports meet, group picnic, felicitation of noted personalities in different fields, running a Crèche, library, donating food to the destitute, free medical camp, blood donation camp etc during the last 30 years. It is very difficult to enlist all its activities since inception. Hence some recent activities are enlisted here.
ACTIVITIES (2009-2010)
- Since many complaints were getting from the nurses working in private hospital about their harassment, formation of Body for the nurses was initiated and a committee was formed with representatives of nurses to look after such complaints.
- Termination of services of nursing staff by the Red Cross Society was taken up with Red Cross authorities and His Excellency Governor of Madhya Pradesh.
- Financial help of Rs.10,000/- was given for the treatment of Shri Ravi Nair’s daughter on 10.6.2009.
- Cultural competition for the children was organized on 29.6.2009 at SreeNarayana Mission Hall.
- Visited Union Ministers Shri E Ahemed, MOS for Railways, ShriVayalar Ravi, Minister for Overseas Affairs and submitted memorandum for improvement of railway facilities to Kerala from central India.
- Onam was celebrated on 2nd Sept.2009 with various cultural programs at RavindraBhavan. Athapoov competition was held on 30.8.09 at SN Mission Hall.
- Held various meetings and formed different committees to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of United Malayalee Association on 20th& 21st Nov.2009 with mega shows.
- A delegation of Association members visited New Delhi on 14.9.09 to invite Shri A.K. Antony, Shri Vayalar Ravi for the Silver Jubilee celebration on 21st November’09.
- Reception was accorded to Ms P.T. Usha.
- A literary Meet was held on 20th Nov.2009 with various noted personalities from Kerala participated. Kathakali by Kalamandalam Kuttiashan and team was also performed.
- Silver Jubilee was celebrated in a grand way at St. Xavier’s school ground with approx. 4000 audience. In the program Hon’ble Urban Admn. Minister and ex-Chief Minister Shri Babulal Gaur was the Chief Guest. Ex Chief Minister and M.P. ShriKailash Joshi was special guest and various other dignitaries were present.
- Cultural programs by local talents were presented. Malayalam Film Star Shri Kottayam Nazir and Team presented a show. Kalabhavan Rajesh & Team presented a comedy show. Idea Star Singer winner Shri Vivekanandan & team presented melody songs on the occasion. Senior citizens were felicitated. Meritorious people among our members were given special award.
- A beautiful Silver Jubilee Souvenir with 208 pages was released.
- Generated funds of approx. 11 lacs for the silver jubilee program which had an expense of approx. 10 lacs.
- Financial help of Rs. 11,000/- was paid Smt. Savithri Rajan for the marriage of her daughter.
ACTIVITIES (2010-2011)
- A grand reception was accorded to noted film director Shri Adoor Gopalakrishnan on 30.1.2010 at Bhopal.
- Financial help of Rs.10000/- was given to a cancer patient for treatment. Again a financial help of Rs.10,500/- was given for the operation of a poor child.
- Financial help and materials amounting to Rs.20,000/- was given to a person whose both legs were amputed and house was burnt.
- Art of Living course in Malayalam was organized at Bhopal with their senior faculty member Dr. Manikandan from Banglore, which was first time in north India.
- The association took initiative and called a meeting of Malayalee associations of Central India at Bhopal to highlight and press for the demand of more railway facilities to Kerala from Central India.
- As per decision in this meeting, a signature campaign was conducted throughout Bhopal highlighting the needs of improving the railway facility to Kerala. Approx. 4000 signatures were collected from Malayalees.
- A delegation of Malayalee Associations of central India visited New Delhi under the leadership of Shri C.E. Fernandes, Chairman of the Committee and submitted memorandum to Union Ministers for introduction of new trains and improvement of railway facilities to Kerala.
- Onam was celebrated at SN Mission Hall on 25.8.10 with cultural program and also. Ona Sadya for about 800 people were arranged.
- ‘Athapoov’ competition was organized and winners were awarded prizes. Meritorious students were given prizes during the Onam function.
- CD of the ‘Silver Jubilee Function’ was released which is available for sale.
- Cultural programs were presented during the Onamcelebration of Hoshangabad Malayalee Association, by the artists of UMA.
- Organised a Drama “Bhagavatjugam” of Shri KavalamNarayanaPanicker on 28.11.10 at BHEL Cultural Hall to coincide with the 26th year celebration. ShriKavalamNarayanaPanicker was given a welcome during the occasion.
- Senior citizens, outstanding persons of our community, regular blood donors of the association were felicitated on the occasion.
- 14 patients were given blood by the members of the association at different hospitals.
- Funeral assistance of Rs. 3000/- was given to a needy family. Also offered help in sending 5 dead bodies to their relatives.
- Educational help of Rs.9000/- was paid to needy children.
- Meeting was organised on 30.12.10 to condole the death of former Kerala Chief Minister Shri K.Karunakaran who passed away on 22.12.10. Members paid rich tributes to the veteran leader in the meeting.
- Free Eye Check up camp was organized on 26.1.2011 at Indrapuri in association with doctors of BMHRC. Also on the occasion of World Glaucoma day Free Eye Check up and treatment camp was organized at Subhash Nagar in association with BMHRC doctors.
- Family get together was organized on 27.3.2011 at Dhanwantari Park.
- Memorandum was submitted to Hon’ble Union Minister for Civil Aviation, ShriVayalar Ravi during his visit to Bhopal on 28.6.2011, requesting introduction of air service to Kerala from Bhopal.
- A meeting of Malayalee Associations of Central India was organized at Bhopal on 15.8.11 to discuss the issues faced by Malayalees particularly constraints in train travel to Kerala.
- Website of UMA was launched on 31.08.2011.
- Met His Excellency Governor Shri Ram NareshYadav and submitted memorandum for on Mullaperiyar Dam issue requesting Central Govt. to interfere in the matter. Another Memorandum also submitted for improvement of railway facilities to Kerala.
- On the anniversary of Gas Tragedy, on 3rd Dec.2011, a free Cancer awareness camp was organized at CTO Bairagarh in association with Jawaharal Nehru Cancer Hospital. Director of the Hospital and Doctors gave lecteres on the occasion and free check up was also organized.
- Free Ayurveda treatment camp was organized at Om VidyalayaBairagarh on 8.1.2012. More than 250 people took benefit of this camp.
- During these two years approx.. 200 members were given membership.
- A calendar for the year 2012 was released.
- AGM was held on 29.1.2012 at ICUF Ashram Shahpura, Bhopal.
ACTIVITIES (2011-2012)
- Took membership in All India Malayalee Association (AIMA).
- Short Story competition was organized on All India basis. The winners were given prizes of Rs.25,000/-, Rs.10000/-, Rs.5000/- respectively. The prizes were sponsored by Mr Bernard John in whose mother’s memory the award namely ‘Emily John’ award was constituted.
- Additional financial help of Rs.10000/- was given to Mr. John for his treatment of Kidney.
- Approx. 350 books donated by MrRajgopal of Mathrubhoomi, Calicut was received for library.
- Amicably settled the legal case filed by Mr. Joji Jacob against the association.
- Election of new office bearers for 2012-2014 was held on 1st July 2012.
- Amendment of By-law was obtained after a long follow up.
- Onam was celebrated with various cultural program on 29.8.2012 at Campion School.
- Athapoovcompetition was also held on the occasion of Onam.
- Food packets were distributed to the inmates of Old age home – Anand Dam, Bhopal on the occasion of Independence day.
- In order to promote our traditional arts, a Kathakali and Chendamelam was presented at SamanvyaBhavan on 9.12.12. The troupe was from GandhiSadanam, Palakad.
- Financial help of Rs.31,000/- was given to MrsPradeepPillai who was admitted in Agrawal hospital for her treatment.
- Educational help of Rs.35000/- was given to the children of MsrPradeepPillai. Other organisations like SreeNarayana Mission, AyyappaSamajamKolar Road, Family Friends Foundation also contributed towards this cause.
- A program for Women development is underway.
- A staff of BMHRC Mr. Hari lost his entire belongings during train journey. The association took up the issue with authorities and he has received back all the lost items.
